How to use shbrowseforfolder and shgetpathfromidlist when user clicks on a application on start menu or desktop?

I have a c++ application that creates shortcut in desktop and start menu.When the user right clicks on the shortcut it will create the corresponding context-menus.I am completely new to shell programming so can anybody help me regarding how to use shell functions to determine the location of application in the disk (like C:/blah/blah/Startmenu or C:/blah/blah/Desktop). I have read articles about using SHBrowseForFolder and SHGetPathFromIDList for this approach. But could not find any leads.
